SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) Archimandrite Dr Attallah Hannah, Spokesman of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate: "Within the Patriarchate there is an opposition group which is opposing the (Greek Orthodox) Patriarch (of Jerusalem) Irineos, including Greek bishops and clergymen and I among them. This group is opposing this scheme. This is why we should avoid making any generalisations about all the Greeks because we oppose what is being done. What Irineos has done is a unilateral action to him and his assistants. Our problem is not with the Greek people but with this group which arrived here not in order to serve the church but to work against it and will sell what belongs to the Orthodox Waqf (trus...

English/Nat XFA Hundreds of Christian leaders and politicians on Thursday paid their last respects to Jerusalem's Greek Orthodox Patriarch, Diodorus the First. The patriarch died late on Tuesday at the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem. He was 77. Diodorus - who had been suffering from liver ailments related to diabetes - had presided over his church's presence in the Holy Land for nearly two decades. Among the visitors bidding the patriarch a final farewell at the Greek Patriarchate on Thursday was Faisal Husseini. The Palestinian minister of Jerusalem affairs - representing Yasser Arafat - paid tribute to Diodoros, saying his death was a great loss. He likened the patriarch to Omar el-Khatab, a famous historical Muslim figure who was prominent in creating good relation...

Israel's President Reuven Rivlin visited the Greek Patriarch of Jerusalem in the Old City, for a meeting with the heads of Christian Churches in Israel. The President was received warmly by Greek Patriarch Theophilos III, who presented the President to the assembled Church leaders. This is the first visit of an Israeli president to the site since the visit of President Navon over 30 years ago. The President thanked the Patriarch, and noted that as the Jewish community had just finished celebrating the festival of Passover, "When the People of Israel were slaves in Egypt, the first thing Moses asked for was not to ease the hard work, but for the freedom of worship. The trigger to the Exodus from Egypt was the demand of the Hebrews to 'Let us worship our God'." The President stressed,...

At a recent Sunday mass, Arab Christians enthusiastically joined in the ancient chants and prayers of their faith - until the name of their spiritual leader was invoked. "Unworthy, unworthy, unworthy," some called out in unison, their disdain aimed at Theophilos III, the Greek Orthodox patriarch of Jerusalem and leader of some the 220,000 Arab Christians in Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian territories. In recent weeks, such chants repeatedly erupted during services, the latest sign of trouble for a secretive church hierarchy whose previous leader was ousted a decade ago over allegations that he sold prime church property to Jews trying to increase their presence in traditionally Arab east Jerusalem. The church's vast real estate holdings in the Holy Land also play a role in the curren...
